I have learned this too and it feels so much part of my learning as a business woman. I was going to hire a VA and asked for her resume and references. She said that she does not "give out her resumes," but would be happy to give me references. I was willing to go with that, but today woke up to a letter from her saying she was not feeling "healthy enough" to take a new client and no references. It was hard to ask for it, but I am learning that it is really important to find these things out up front, as it has biten me in the butt in the past. Best of luck to you in your new position!
